Panchur College
Affiliated to University of Calcutta
The Department of English has been an integral part of Panchur College since the inception of the college in 2008. Initially, the department offered only the General course to the students. It was in the year 2017 that the department started offering the Honours course to the students. There is a wide range of courses taught in the department according to the new CBCS curriculum, which include History of English Literature, Philology, Ancient European Classics, Indian English Literature, American Literature, Popular Literature, Rhetoric and Prosody, Modern European Drama, Postcolonial Literature, among others.
The faculty not only employs traditional classroom teaching methods but also effectively uses the Smart Classroom for making powerpoint presentations, showing short film clips related to the syllabus, along with the use of other audio-visual teaching aids. Regular class tests are taken to assess the academic progress of the students. The students of the first semester are taken for a library orientation tour guided by the faculty in order to familiarise them with the books on English Literature. Students are constantly motivated to read both fiction and non-fiction, which are not part of the syllabus, so that their overall knowledge and command of English is strengthened. Seminars and workshops are also organised for the students in order to aid their overall skill development.
